Another Water Main Break

A water main break today in Pleasant Hills is the area's fourth since Wednesday.

The 12-inch main near the corner of Route 51 and Fidelity Drive broke at about 3 p.m., according to Gary Lobaugh, a spokesman for Pennsylvania American Water.

Three customers have had water service off, and the company is predicting restoration by 8 p.m.

Repairs to a 60-inch water transmission main that broke Wednesday in Aspinwall were finished this morning.

While a boil water order remains in effect for the Waterworks mall a similar order for about 1,500 Aspinwall homes was lifted this morning, according to Melissa Rubin, a spokeswoman for the Water and Sewer Authority.

The boil order for the mall remains in effect until a second test determines the water is safe for cooking and drinking.

Wednesday's break of the water main at Freeport Road and Delafield Avenue flooded streets and disrupted traffic for hours. It also briefly cut off water at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital.

On Friday, a 40-foot geyser spraying from an 8-inch water main break on Carnahan Road near Green Tree's border with Banksville. That break spewed water and chunks of asphalt into a home and onto lawns along the street.

The same day, a water main break, in Squirrel Hill affected the fire suppression system of the Riverview Tower assisted living center and damaged the building's first-floor beauty salon.

Crews shut off water to the 137-unit high rise and a nearby nursing home while making repairs, according to Ellen Gamble, spokeswoman for Presbyterian SeniorCare. None of the building's 200 residents had to be evacuated. A separate 4-inch water line that feeds the building's plumbing system was not damaged, and service was restored Friday afternoon.
