Woman Charged w theft Accused Granddaughter

A 50-year-old Fayette County grandmother is accused of abandoning her 8-year-old granddaughter after she was stopped by loss prevention officers Wednesday at a Wal-Mart store near Uniontown.

Elaine H. Weimer, of P.O. Box 23, Connellsville, was charged with corruption of minors, endangering the welfare of children and retail theft by state police in Uniontown after the incident at the Wal-Mart in South Union Township. She was charged before Uniontown District Judge Joseph M. George Jr.

Police allege Weimer and her granddaughter entered the store about 11:23 a.m. and loss prevention officers noticed the pair were walking through the store placing items in blue store bags. Police allege the two walked through a closed register and attempted to exit the store without paying for the items.

When officers interceded, police said, the woman claimed not to know the girl and "walked away" and fled in a waiting car. The girl later identified the woman as her grandmother, according to police.

Weimer was arraigned before Uniontown District Judge Joseph George and committed to the county jail in lieu of $2,500 bond.
